Peak Hours

Peak and off peak hours are specific times of the day when the cost of electricity varies for consumers using time of use or TOU meters. These meters are usually installed for three phase connections or larger commercial and industrial loads. During peak hours, the demand for electricity is at its highest across the national grid, which leads the government to charge a significantly higher rate per unit to discourage excessive use and manage the load. Off peak hours cover the rest of the day and offer a much lower rate, making it the ideal time to run heavy appliances like air conditioners, washing machines, or electric water heaters.

General Schedule

For most distribution companies in Pakistan, the peak hours are not fixed throughout the year. They shift according to the season to align with sunset times and the changing patterns of domestic and industrial energy consumption. The following schedule applies to the majority of providers, including LESCO, IESCO, FESCO, GEPCO, MEPCO, PESCO, HESCO, SEPCO, QESCO, and the newly formed HAZECO.

  • December to February: 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM
  • March to May: 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM
  • June to August: 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM
  • September to November: 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Off and On Peak Hours

While the national distribution companies follow the uniform schedule mentioned above, K-Electric operates on its own specific timeline due to its independent nature in Karachi. It is also important to note that as of April 2026, the federal government has introduced a peak relief strategy. This involves scheduled power outages of approximately two and a quarter hours between 5:00 PM and 1:00 AM in many regions to avoid further increases in the base tariff. This load management is separate from the billing hours but often coincides with the peak window.

Managing Your Bill

To keep your monthly costs manageable, it is helpful to verify the specific type of meter you have. If your bill shows separate readings for peak and off peak units, you can save a significant amount of money by shifting your heavy laundry or dishwashing tasks to the early morning or afternoon. Even small details like iron use or charging electric bikes can impact your total bill if done consistently during the expensive evening window. In 2026, many households are also opting for smart home systems that automatically dim non-essential lights or turn off high-energy devices when the peak hour starts.
